CHAPTER 13

F aith felt enfolded, cared for, as Ian carried her. He bent down to pick up something from the ground and she was barely even jostled. She didn’t know where they were going, and she didn’t care too terribly much, either.

It was nearly night, based on the color of the sky above, but the ravine itself was dark and unforgiving. She couldn’t see anything. The rain that Ian had predicted began to fall. He hunched over her as he carried her, as if trying to keep her dry.

“Are you doing all right?” he asked.

“A little cold.”

He wrapped his arms around her more firmly.

“What happened to me, anyway?” she asked. “I was sitting in my car, arguing with you, and then…”

“Then some asshole from the bar rammed into you.” Ian’s voice went dark as he said it. She could fully imagine him doing violence.

“My car’s totaled, isn’t it?” she asked.

“Yeah, I think so.”

She wouldn’t mind doing some violence, too. She’d saved up money working an extra job through college so she could afford that car, and she’d driven it ever since. Now it was gone.

“Where’s the guy who hit me?” she asked.

“He followed you down. I fought him and took back your handbag, which he’d stolen.”

“For the pages,” she said slowly, putting it together.

“I think so, yeah.”

That guy had wrecked her car and could have killed her for a few pieces of paper? Now she really needed to know what this book was about.

“Where are we going?” Faith asked.

“There are hunting cabins all around this area. I’m hoping to find one.”

“Oh. Okay.”

She knew that part of her acceptance of this strange man was due to her weakness. Had she been fully awake and thinking faster, she’d probably be running away. Then again, they’d slept together, months ago, and he hadn’t hurt her. And today, he’d done nothing but protect her.

“Have you always been…a bear man?” she asked.

He gave a short bark of laughter, but when he looked down at her, it was with fondness. “Yes. We don’t have our first shift until sometime during puberty, but the bear has always been a part of me.”

“Are you going to bite me?” she asked, strangely not afraid.

“If you let me,” he said, flashing a wicked grin at her. “But it won’t be hard, and it won’t give you a bear.”

She felt her face go hot at what he was really saying—he still wanted to do sexy things with her.

But he’d respected her wishes, and other than just now, he hadn’t been overtly flirting with her.

“There’s a cabin or something up here,” he said.

Faith squinted, trying to see anything in front of them. All she could make out were the shadowy trunks of trees.

He slowed his gait and raised his head, sniffing the air.

“No one’s been here in a long time,” he said.

The cabin came into view. They were approaching from the back or side, Faith couldn’t tell which. There was no door in sight, only a paneless window. She couldn’t tell if the glass had broken, or if there had never been glass to begin with.
